I've been listening to a lot of phish and I like the whole Jazz-Rock style. I've heard of guitarists like John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Scott Henderson, Pat Martino, and Jimmy Herring. I'm not sure what are some of their better albums. Please post what you think are the best albums to get.

Scott Henderson with Tribal Tech:

Face First, Reality Check, Illicit, Tribal Tech (ALL of these are slammin')

Metheny:

Trio Live in Europe (not really jazz-rock, but WELL worth your time and dime)

John McLaughlin:

I personally really liked his "Mahavishnu" C.D. from the early 80's...not the classic Mahavishnu, but a cool release....lots of guitar synth....

Pat Martino dabbled in jazz-rock in the mid-70's, but not since....

Those releases are:

Joyous Lake, Starbright

I'd also recommend:

John Scofield:

Blue Matter, Still Warm, Loud Jazz, Pick Hits Live

Allan Holdsworth:

Wardenclyffe Tower, Metal Fatigue, Road Games, Secrets, IOU, Hard Hat Area...

Hope this helps...

Peace,

Scott Jones

Frank Zappa - ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Oh god how I love this album... although it's not really jazz.
