Check out the Joe Satriani lessons on modes at guitarworld.com's lessons (http://guitarworld.com/0100/framesets/lessons.html) It's the best place to start.

You gotta know your scales, probably the pentatonics are a good place to start. You should learn various licks that have been proven to sound good over the years, and you should basically just play where your fingers wanna go and what your ear wants to hear:cool: (within the scales- you can go off the scales but starting off its probably better not to and even when you do, only as passing notes)
