..... taking a chord up the neck instead of playing it open string at the 1st to 3rd fret......

Only hint I know of is:
1) If several of you are playing backup in open string chords, one should go up the neck and add another "voice".
2) Some like playing up the neck anyway. Next time you see B. B. King on TV, Video, DVD or whatever notice that he plays everything around the 8th to 14th fret. I think he likes that area as the frets are closer and the key patterns he likes are there.

I don't know of any rules, it's up to you what you like to hear.

My opinion....... for what that's worth.

Only things I know is voicing a chord will depend upon what the other instruments are doing and the intention of the persons playing the music. You can omit tones from a chord and get the same effect.
Since Ive never been in a band and only play solo my way of voicing is different but really neat.

ie...
key of A

----5--7--9--10--0--2--4
----10-0--2--3---5--7--9
----2--4--6--7---9--11-1
----7--9--11-0---2--4--6
----0--2--4--5---7--9--11
----5--7--9--10--0--2--4
R 9 3 11 5 13 7............the I chord
7 R 9 3 11 5 13............the ii chord
ETC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

now following the tab above

------------0------
------------3------
------------6------
-------------------
-------------------
-------------------
Using the chart below the tab we can concur that
this chord can be considered an 11th chord used as both the I and ii chords of the key.I use the highest number in the construction and name the chord from that.Even tho you may not have the root
in the chord.( since we are working from A) we must assume that the intended music will be in A.If we were working with a different key
with the same tab as above then obviously the chord may be a 7th a 9th or whatever of that new key.I like this method which is my own creation and is a culmination of 8 yrs of theory.I like thinking in terms of the nashville numbers instead of like A major minor 7th.
This way is worlds easier to understand.

Also probably of better use of this system you can pick from the columns the name of the chord and then decide which voicing is the best and easiest to play. This system works excellent for scale useage because the tab is written in order of the scale degrees.
