hey guys,
ok i have no idea about guitar upkeep but obviously i want my instrument to last...so when i bought my electric guitar last july, the dealer said that i should bring it in every year to get a "tune-up" and they would check it out and make sure everything is working fine....anyone ever done this? has anyone ever heard of this even? what do they do? how much does it cost? is it worth it? how often should i have it done? does this also apply to my acoustic guitar? thanks for any answers to my many questions...

peace,
jon

Well it's kinda like a car, after normal usage stuff gets knocked out of adjustment, some things need cleaned, somethings need replaced over time. If you don't know what you're doing with it, take it for someone else to do it for you. There are things I do on my own, and then there are things I'd leave for a tech to do. I'm not about to replace a nut or put new frets on a guitar, but I will change pickups, hardware, electronics, etc. My local guitar tech will do a full adjustment on the guitar (tuning, truss rod, intonation, action, pickups) for about 40 bucks. That's really cheap! He gets everything exact too. I don't see anything wrong with taking your guitar in every year for it to be cleaned, and fully adjusted.

Okay to do but not necessary. Do it yourself next time you replace the strings.

Give it a good cleaning
Check the machine heads for tightness
Clean the fret board and polish the body
