I had already tried to post to this list but I guess I did summat wrong :).
Anyway, after much looking around checking out reviews and pestering Music
Shop Assistants I have (sort of) decided on a Epiphone SG400 or a Epiphone
Les Paul Studio. However I have not shut the door on any other possibilities
yet until I finally buy around the end of February. My budget is around £300
and basically this will probably be the last Guitar I buy for a long while as
I can't afford them. So I want the best for the Money. I like the humbucker
sound as opposed to the single coil pickups. And I love the look of the SG400.
Am I making a wise choice? If not why not and what else do you suggest?

btw if this Mail looks wierd its because I'm on a Amiga and not all features
of this mailing list work in my browser :(. Thats the next thing I'm saving for.

I actually played the Epi Paul over the last month or so... the one I played seemed like a pretty good guitar, nice action and sounded pretty good. The one I played did seem to be well constructed and no real problems with it (I hated the finish). kinda had the feel of the Gibson but was a lot more mid-rangey (if thats a word) than I am used to. the sustain could have been better, but that is correctable to some degree. all in all not bad for the money. I didn't play the SG version tho so I can't help ya there.

Thanks for the opinion. I know the whole thing of wich guitar is best is really subjective
but for me £300 is a huge amount of money to pay out and I wanna be sure. I prefer the looks
of the SG. The guy in the shop made it sound pretty nice. I much preferred the sound to a Strat.

I like SG's myself. If you wanted a better sound than you could put in some Gibson Angus Young signature humbuckers to put in it (it's what he has in his SG).

I like the SGs better then the Les Pauls. Epiphone guitars might not be the best for you though. Like i always say, go to the shop and play everything in your price range and below. You might be suprised by which ones you think play the best.

I'm having a job getting to grips with this forum. I'm not keen on web based forums :(.
Anyway, Problem is I can't really play that good so I'll have to get the ppl in the
shop to play instead. So although I'm getting the sound but not the feel. I don't think
at the moment I'd notice much diffrence. But I want a better Guitar for
psychological reasons. It's more fun to pick up a guitar that you feel like
playing that makes you feel a star. Than picking up a boring old Sunburst Encore.
Regarding the pickups. I had read that you can always upgrade them. So it seems to me
buy a Guitar that has a timeless look (for you), that feels good. Then upgrade the
hardware when you outgrow that.

I was looking into buying the same model a while ago, (the G-400). According to all the reviews I've read, they seem to be a great guitar for the price. But I haven't played one yet (haven't been to the music store in a while) so I couldn't tell ya if its any good in my opinion.I think I'd just buy it for it's look :)
