no f*ckin way! Les Claypool has gotta be the best rock bassist. His style is wild but thats how he is, and he can play fast for a bassist, and his cooky melodic basslines always rock:cool:

metallica used to have a good bass player...but not anymore. and they dont play any of the old stuff on mtv. so regretfully i'im pushing them into that category. also les claypool is one of the greatest bass palyers ever! how can oyu say he's over rated? basstallica? your insane. and any band that has ever been on TRL... i'm never really impressed with ozzy's bassists either. how coincidental that they all tie in with metallica...hmm...rage against the machine. slayers really sucks. all he does is play 1 note over and over or fallow the guitar.

you people are all nutts... do any of you even play bass??
claypool is a mess... i think hes horrible... and rob from tallica (ozzy) is great... when he was with ozzy he was playing alot of music that was written by other bassists... and now that hes in tallica he does an awsome job as a finger bassist... jason used a pick and simpled up alot of the stuff teh cliff wrote but for rob to jump in and play alot of the old riffs his way is great you cant say hes not a good bassist at all

I gotta say I really do agree with FleaBassTallicash. Les Claypool= overrated.
Maybe I was a bit hasty just saying "anyone on MTV." But I don't really hear too much from those bands on MTV. They're too busy playing The Real World for me to bother watching.

what is it about les claypool that is so bad then?
he wrote the south park theme didnt he? i downloaded primus covering master of puppets live (just up to the end of the main riff) and he was doing it all with his fingers.
i really hope we get some valid evidence for him being so over-rated.
also, rob trujilo RULES!!!

damn it takes an ignorant person to say that john paul jones was a horrible bassist. he came up with many of led zep's catchy riffs, and he also played some good keyboard (see trampled underfoot, misty mountain hop, etc.) i am biased because led zep is one of my favorites and i think jpj did a wonderful job, but thers no way in hell you can say he sucked

JPJ is great, he played really solid basslines that were very tasteful. He was probably the most musical in the band also, his contributions to the writing of Zep's songs cant go unnoticed.
Claypool is good too if you ask me, his approach may be unorthodox, but you cant deny his raw talent.

**** you fellas seem to like alot of gay bassists,at least the fellow who thinks that jason nad rob are good, they my friend are abarage, you said that Rob was playing good stuff written by other players, well anyone can play "good" stuff written by other player,it is what you can come up with that shows what ya can really do.
Also,in saying that Les Clypool is only good ,i find that verry funny,i beleive you even asked if anyone realy played bass around here,i am shure they are do,and i am sure they all have more sense than you, because Les Claypool although he is nowheres near my fav player,is an amazing bass player, and is insave as Entwistle was,Claypool could destroy him.
Ya see Jon was good as the rock rythm bass player,he knew how to make lines that intrested people, his shtuff was crazy, but Claypool on the other hand is basically the lead bass palyer,he is the lead in Primus,I am sure you would have a lot more trouble in all you life learnig a hard sond by Claypool than ya would by Entwistle.
CLIFF BURTON is killer,what a shame R.I.P:(

We all know the most useless bass player ever is Ian Hill of Judas Priest. Have you ever heard the bass line while listening to their music? Heck, the guy didn't even want to be filmed in their videos. Why, because he knew he was worthless. The band could have saved money by not having him, thus not having to pay his salary!!!:D

Learn to ****ing type, and none of these bassists are "gay". Lol the way some people talk about Trujillo and other bassists makes it seem like there is a rivalry between Black Sabbath and Metallica.

rob wrote some very good creative things for suicidal tendancies

Jason left tallica cause A. they werent working on anything at the time B. they wouldnt let him make his echobrain album.
Rob left ozzy cause metallica asked him to be the new bassist.
Jason was then asked to try out for ozzy and they asked him to be their bassist

Basstallica and other people, just cause a part is easy to play does not neccesarily mean the player playing it is not talented. It does show alot about the player and may be true in many cases, but you shouldnt let that solely influence your thoughts on a player. There are plenty of awesome bassists who have played simple root/fifth bass lines at times.
First and foremost the bass is the nucleus of the band, you need to assist the other players by keeping time for everyone and establishing where chord changes occur. After that part of the job is fulfilled you can worry about spicing up your playing with difficult lines and syncopation, etc.
That being said I think Claypool is great. He has amazing time even while playing very complex slap figures and really compliments the band nicely. He fulfills the basic job of a bassist yet he manages to still be totally unique in every way. That is extremely difficult to do and whether you like it or not it places him in an elite group of bassists.
Oh and if you want a difficult bass part form Claypool, check out their latest album some of the slap lines he plays are heavily syncpated and really difficult to play correctly.

I know I'll probably sound ignorant when I say this, (Considering, i've only recently started to want to learn how to play the bass guitar) but I wouldn't know a lousy bass player if I heard one. They all sound the same to me. Sometimes I don't even notice the bass in songs. Except anything from RHCP. Flea is amazing on bass. So is Tim from RATM.

i agree with you... sam rivers from limp bizkit plays very simple thigns.. but i find him to be a very talented bassist.. and he has the ability to paly alot better but he chooses not to.
its just my opinion that claypool is over rated.. i dont like him.. that dosnt mean other people have to hate him
