Yeah, I can't wait to see it. I think my dad is gonna take me sometime. I've read the 1st book and half the 2nd and they're really good, so I wanna see the movie. I didn't think I would, cuz I don't normally like movies of fantasy books, but it looks pretty accurate to the book! So I can't wait to see it :D

Okay, I've seen it twice now, and I must say, it is the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my entire life! The New Zealand countryside is positively breathtaking! Every scene in the movie is exactly as I had imagined it would look. I was very impressed by Peter Jackson's adaptation. He took some artistic license, but it didn't harm the story in any way. His work is pure genius! Two thumbs up!!!
yes, I've also seen it. I was at a midnight premiere, with lots of people disguised as orcs, hobbits, elves and whatever around me - pretty scary.
The movie is very good, yes - but to my mind, it destroys a bit of the magic around the Lord of the Rings, doesn't it? I mean, almost everyone has read the 3 books so far and built up his/her own imagination the story - and suddenly, you get a face for each of the characters etc.. do you think you could read the book again without imagining that Frodo looks like Elijah Woods for example? I doubt that.
But as a movie, it was awesome. New Zealand seems to have a really beautiful landscape, however, it's almost exactly on the other side of the world, relatively seen to where I am (Europe) :)
@smfulla:
AOTEAROA!!!!!!!! - What does that mean?

That is exactly what i don't like about book-based movies, they ruin the pictures in your imagination...lucky for me,i haven't read the book yet..:)
and as far as i know..aotearoa is new zealand...right? land of the long white cloud :D
smfulla
12-21-2001, 04:09 PM
Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand
Aotearoa means - Land of the long white cloud
It was called this because when the Maori canoes (waka) were coming into shore, a maori woman saw this long white cloud stretching over most of the land
I'm half maori, half pakeha (pakeha = white man)
If you wanna know a little more about maori and new zealand, just ask me, I'm always happy to talk about it
but yeh, lol, it'll prolly turn out that you wont want to, lol
neway, I'm gunna see lord of the rings in about 5 days or so

Smfulla, please tell me more about your heritage. I am always interested to know about the history and culture of other countries!
Actually, I didn't think the movie ruined the images I have in my mind from the books. To me, they are two completely separate works of art--both beautiful and perfect in their own way.

hey cool =]
Well I'll give you a brief outline of what's 'sorta' happened so far
Lets see.
well sometime ages ago when the british empire was looking to colonise over in pacific islands and stuff, they decided to try and take us over. They like send out a battalian or whateva, the first time they tried, we kicked there ass, then the next time they came, they just had too many men, supplies, etc. So somehow after all of this, they sent in settlers, missionaries, etc. The maori were all but assymilated into the pakeha culture. Neway, a treaty was formed, in 2 versions. A maori, and english version. In the english version, it stated that the maori were to give over all of the land to the queen in return becoming british subjects....
In the maori version it stated that the maori were still to control what happened to the land, but they would loan it to the queen as long as it would benefit the maori and the land. The maori unknowingly signed away their land. But in later years, attempts with money, acts (sort of like ammendmants in the US I think), and giving back some of the land, to reconcile have just left the maori people more frustrated over the fact they were swindled. But race relations is much better, there's hardly any racism anymore. Umm yeah, thats a brief outline of how things are in New Zealand. It's not the cool part of the maoris, the cool part is in the legends and storys they have =]

WOW! This is an ABSOLUTELY amazing movie! I was SO impressed with it. It was VERY true to the books too. It really helped to have read the book first, because then it was alot easier to keep up with the characters and stuff, because Tokien REALLY develops the characters in the book and the movie is obviously made by someone who has read the books many times so they don't develop the characters as well. Also, I enjoyed it more having read the book and seeing the way they did stuff and being like *oh that's just how I pictured it* or whatever. And as for it being how I pictured it, they did a GREAT job! It looked like they photographed my mind and put it on a screen! Except for Lothlorien. It should have been sunnier don't you think?
barbietta
01-02-2002, 07:03 PM
Yeah, I initially thought Lothlorien was portrayed a little gloomy too. It's supposed to be the "golden wood", right? Anyway...the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th times I saw the movie (ha ha) I watched a little closer, and they did cast a yellow light on the trees when they show them. Also, remember that scene with Frodo at the mirror occurs at night. I pictured Galadriel as being more mystical than spooky too, but did you notice after she resisted the temptation of the ring, she was less spooky and more mortal?
God...I really am a geek... ;)

are you talking about maori words? or words that are in the story of Lord Of The Rings?
because if you were talking about words that are in the story of Lord Of The Rings, then I wouldn't have the foggiest, but as for maori words, jsut make a list and I'd be happy to help =]
OH crap, I'll put in my 2 cents about lord of the rings.
OMG, I was soo astounded. The story is soooo enthralling!!! Tolkien was a genius!!!! Its totally worth seeing again. I could sooo tell it was filmed in New Zealand =]
Oh my gosh those ring wrathes (dunno the spelling?) are sooo cool!!!!! they have the baddest horses! But that elvish chick (forgot her name) kicked their asses HARD! =]

That would be Arwen Evenstar. :)
Sorry...I absolutely love that story! You should see it. For our wedding a few years ago, my husband and I had special rings made--his has an elvish enscription around the band like "the one" ring (I actually learned to speak a little Quenya so I could figure out what to say on it), and mine is like Elrond's ring, Vilya, the ring of air. I've also been doing oil paintings of various scenes from the story for around our house...Moria...Lothlorien...
For the record, I *don't* speak Klingon. I'm not THAT geeky! ;)

:)
i meant maori words.
i am not sure which ones are actually real maori and which ones are made up for the story?
well....i guess like
aotearoa
maori
pakeha
and any others you might think are good to share.
especially with the first two ...with all the vowels, i wonder if there is a rule which one you stress or if some are silent.....?

OK, that does not have anything to do with guitars or music but:
Lord Of The Rings is one of the best films I saw in this century
and
smuffla, you live in a beatiful country.

hmmm
Aotearoa
Ao - as in Our
te - as in tear
a - as in are
ro - as in raw
a - as in are
with the first 3... 'as in's, don't really say the r's
but the trick with the ro, is to roll the r
with all maori words, you have to roll your r's
but not for too long.
hold on, just a basic rule of thumb, you always have to pronounce your vowels one way...
like this
A - like the a in are
E - like the word air
I - like you're saying eee =]
O - like the o in or
U - like you're saying eww (yuck)
try saying them seperatly, then try saying Ao. The trick to saying 2 vowels together is merging them. You say the A, then while you're still saying it, move your mouth so it were as if you were goign to say o, but keep it all in the same breath. see how you get an Ow sort of sound. Now try it with Ea. then Oa. And then say Aotearoa =]
And it shoudl be perfect! =]
And maori is said the same, just practice the Ao, and the I. For those of you who have taken Japanese classes, maori is like exactly the same for how to say vowels. I think just the pairing of 2 vowels is different, I might be wrong tho.
oh and pakeha should be easy now that you have how to say the vowels.
oh, and if you ever encounter a word with a WH at the beginning or some where else, you say it like you're saying an F. It's NOT like you're about to say 'what', and example is whakapapa (easy one for you guys)

nah a maori wouldn't be offended by your pronunciation, he/she would jsut think you're pretty funny =]
if you really wanna see if you're right, record yourself saying a word, and I'll grade it, lol =]
