ok i hope this isnt too weird but i thought id ask here and maybe you guys would have some insight....

last weekend i got my first electric...but i didnt buy an amp because we still have so much christmas shopping to do....and a relative said he had something he would loan me until i buy one...

its a guitar signal processor....and its hooked up through our stereo...which for me is less than ideal..because i can only use it when no one else is home and its in a pretty uncomfortable place in my house...but...its what i got....

now this thing has like 192 programmed options available which this relative has already set up because he used it alot....and it seems pretty nice....but....i just think its over my head as far as gear goes? am i wrong or being too bashful about using this thing?

it becomes a moral question for me because now he wants to sell it to me for 60 dollars....and he claims he is going to use the money to buy his pregnant gf a ring...but...i have my doubts if he is being honest...

i dunno if i should buy it and tell him he can buy it back when he wants it....or if im wasting my time....or if this thing is any good for a "beginner" like me?

what would you do?

personally, if I was in your situation, I would tell the dude that it wasn't really what I was looking for at the moment.
Seriously, if he want's to sell it, he could always go to a pawn shop type thing. But really if it's not for you, then you can't be expected to buy it. Maybe he could get a better job to get his girlfriend a ring.

it seems as if that thing really isn't what you are looking for! Also, it's a bit strange to tell you about his pregnant girlfriend's ring: to my mind, this seems a little bit over-dramatically, doesn't it? Why doesn't he just sell it to a pawn shop (like smfulla suggested).

Depending on how well you know this friend, he might just trick you into buying something that you wouldn't have bought if he didn't tell you the ring story.

If you know him well, you might reject the buying of SP and loan him the money instead (if you can be sure to get it back later...). This would solve your moral conflict and you won't end up with something you don't want.

I always say if you're not 100% convinced about what you're going to buy, dont buy it.You're bound to regret it.(im saying this from years of experience):)

I would not bother buying it if you are only going to turn around and sell it back to him later. Then you are nothing more than a pawn shop :) What is it exactly? I would look up some info and find out how much it sells for new. 192 is a lot of programming options for a multi-effects processor. Usually the cheap ones have about 30. So if it is an really nice one, $60 is a good deal. You can use it with your amp when you get it. You probably could use the thing with headphones and not use your stereo. Since it has a lot of preset sounds, you don't really need to worry about programming it. But that option is there if you are inclined.

Don't buy it if you do not want it. If it is a nice processor he will have no trouble selling it to someone else for $60. If it is nice and you like it, then you might be getting a great deal. What he will spend the money on is irrelevant. If that is the factor which is driving your decision, don't buy it.

well all i know is it says "digitech gsp 21 pro"
i guess i should look it up...

i kind of trust him thats its at least pretty decent because it is his personal gear...he just moved back to the area and had to pawn all his guitars ('cept the 12 string...thatd be a real shame) but would not give up his gsp...so...im pretty sure hes not trying to trick me there....i really just think he needs the money...and im sure my husband would just give it to him if we didnt question the motive...they were pretty close growing up together...but we wouldnt count on him ever giving the money back...

my big thing is...it would seem to me that a normal combo amp would fit my needs better...so i could get away to another part of the house when everyone is home....but if i go with this processor...my husband may never agree to buying the amp i picked out...

so you think when i got an amp i could hook this thing up thru it? wouldnt it have to be a pretty expensive amp to have the proper inputs? i picked out a marshall avt20 and i dont know if i can do that with that amp....maybe if thats possible i wont feel so bad about getting "stuck" with it in the end...know what i mean?

Here are some reviews

You can use this with any amp. But don't let the hubby skimp on your amp just because you get an effects processor :)

thanks guys :)

im gonna talk it over with my husband and see if we cant help out the cousin without screwin ourselves over then :)

i think the idea of being able to use it in the future takes the sting off of it if he never comes up with the cash to pay us back....(and yeah....im gonna insist on following thru on buying my amp in the next few months ;) )

thanks again!
